U.S. Air Force Awards SBIR Phase I Contract to FireHUD, Inc

FireHUD, a leader in ultra-passive, rugged group physiological monitoring, has been awarded an Air Force Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO) X201-CSO Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract.

Through a competitive awards-based program, the Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) program enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization.

AFWERX, in partnership with Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), and the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN), developed the SBIR Open Topics to increase the efficiency, effectiveness, and transition rate of the SBIR program.

The awarded contract allows FireHUD to bring its expertise to an open topic of exploration within the Air Force: real-time physiological performance of aircrew and mission partners. This gap in capability is especially problematic during high altitude unpressurized operations where physiological incidents can lead to cancelation of training events and mission degradation costing hundreds of thousands of dollars per incident.

FireHUD will work with US Air Force partners to explore necessary adaptations of FireHUD’s BioTrac platform. Deploying an adapted version of the FireHUD BioTrac Platform tailored to USAF aircrew, flight doctors and physiology technicians could result in fewer training delays and cancelations due to physiological events involving USAF aircrews and mission partners operations.

As FireHUD completes this 3-month Phase I, it will aim to initiate either a Phase II project with Air Force partners focused on tackling this problem or direct transition to a sole-source procurement agreement under a Phase III contract. This SBIR also makes it possible for the FireHUD BioTrac Platform to be procured directly from any federal agency.


AFRL and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research process in an attempt to speed up the experience, broaden the pool of potential applicants, and decrease bureaucratic overhead. Beginning in SBIR 18.2, and now in 19.1, the Air Force has begun offering 'Special' SBIR topics that are faster, leaner, and open to a broader range of innovations.
